I like to start with an initial conversation about the themes and ideas that you would like to feature in the portrait; what do you want to say about the sitter? I then research how I might convey that through my drawing or painting to the viewer. Aspects that I might consider include: Whether we want the portrait to feature certain props that have symbolic meaning? What colour scheme might we want to follow and why? Are there certain items, designs or motifs that we might want to highlight with goldleaf gilding? Maybe we want to highlight a name, date or significant phrase or quote? How might the positioning and pose of the sitter or their clothing tell the viewer something?

Armed with these ideas, we will then arrange a sitting. I prefer the sitting to take place in my studio in the Cotswolds where possible but I can travel to the sitter if required. A first sitting usually takes half a day to a day during which time we might explore different poses, clothing and props. I draw from life but use photography to record details that will then be worked on over a period of months in my studio.
After this first sitting, I will draw up a rough composition to be agreed with you. At this stage a deposit will be requested. Further, shorter sittings may be required. Final payment will be due on completion. As a guide, a 20 x 24 inch single portrait usually takes six to seven months to complete.
